Selama ini kita mengenal sebuah komputer atau laptop pasti identik dengan microsoft windows, baik windows xp maupun windows 7 yang diinstal bersamaan saat kita membeli perangkat laptop di tahun 2010 akhir hingga saat ini.Sebenarnya, sebuah laptop atau komputer tidak hanya bisa diinstall windows saja, tapi masih ada beberapa OS lain yang tidak kalah menarik. Linux adalah alternatif OS (Operating System) yang layak dan bisa digunakan bila kita bosan dengan windows atau kita menginginkan sebuah OS yang benar-benar gratis dan halal.
Perlu diketahui, biasanya dalam paket penjualan PC atau laptop yang original adalah windows nya saja, sedangkan aplikasi lain misalnya Office, Corel Draw, Photoshop adalah aplikasi berbeli. Jadi misalnya ketika anda beli laptop dan ada aplikasi bawaan bisa dipastikan kalau aplikasi itu adalah aplikasi bajakan alias curian. Tidak nyaman bukan kalau kita dituduh pencuri ??
Kembali ke Linux, linux adalah Operating System (OS) yang dikembangkan secara open source, artinya tiap linux yang didistribusikan tidak ada biaya yang dikenakan sama sekali, kecuali biaya CD dan ongkos kirim tentunya. Sedangkan aplikasi yang berada didalamnya adalah benar-benar gratis. Logo dari Linux digambarkan dengan seekor penguin.
